Utah Lake on a Beautiful Day
A Beautiful Day on Utah Lake
Last year's excursion to Utah Lake was a real workout. The wind was blowing so hard, we were only able to get about a mile away from the marina before we had to head back. It was fun (what can I say, I've never had a bad day kayaking), but we didn't get to see a lot of scenery. This time, there was only an occasional breeze, the sun was out, hardly any people were around - yup, the perfect paddle.

Eight Miles in Three Hours
I turned my Runkeeper app on to track how far I paddled. Sissy and I were out for about three hours and we went 8.2 miles. We travelled south along the east shore and saw only a couple of other boats. The breeze kept the bugs off on the way out, but coming back the breeze stopped and then those pesky no-see-ums (Ceratopogonidae) turned up. Next time, I'll spray a little bug spray around my exposed spots.
Plenty of Places to Launch on Utah Lake
I like to launch at Lindon Marina, along the northeast side of Utah Lake. It's well-kept with easy, sheltered access to the water. The sandy beach is close enough to the parking that I don't have to use a kayak cart. There are shady, grassy picnic areas, and restrooms available. The price for launching any boat is $8.00. The marina rents canoes, paddleboards, mini sailboats, pedal boats and kayaks for $10-25/hour, depending on the boat.

Go Early in the Summer
If you go to Utah Lake, go early in the Summer. For the last few years, Utah Lake has experienced toxic algae blooms later in the season, which necessitates closing down Lindon Marina and Lincoln Beach. Algae blooms are more prevalent and start earlier during low-water years. Thankfully, Utah had a good snow season this year.
